CONFIDENTIAL.

No. 1.

28 JAN 10

[January 10.]

SECTION 1.

Sir,

Sir Edward Grey to the Marquis de Soveral.

Foreign Office, January 10, 1910. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 3rd instant relative to Macao, and to inform you that, in reply to an enquiry addressed to His Majesty's Minister at Peking the following day, a telegram has been received stating that the prospect of the Chinese Government agreeing to arbitration in any form appears at present to be rather remote. Sir J. Jordan adds that he understands that the Chinese Government propose to await the arrival in Peking of the Chinese Minister to France, who has been dealing with the question at Lisbon.

I have, &c.

E. GREY.
